Your involvement in protecting our environment can be rewarding to yourself and, at same time, may result in the prohibition of entry of an invasive species, or in early detection and eradication of an invasive species. If there had been a response when the Gypsy moth escape was first reported, the moth might never have become established.

You can be personally aware of your actions involving species not native to your region. For example, before you purchase plants for your yard, check to see whether the plants are known to be invasive.

You can encourage the development of and use in public school systems, curriculum for educating students regarding the perils associated with invasive species. This type of education might also be appropriate for programs in youth organizations such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the 4-H.

Your letters, faxes, and e-mails can stimulate the recipient to awareness and involvement in invasive species issues. Local newspapers and television stations can be encouraged to publish reports on invasive species awareness in your community. Encourage public officials who are already concerned/involved with invasive species issues, and inform others, who are unaware of your concern and the importance of their becoming aware.

You can join and become an active participant in organizations that have already demonstrated their concern and involvement in invasive species issues.
