What Others Are Doing
Associations and committees on invasive species, primarily focused on weeds, can be found for many states including: California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, and Missouri. Some nationwide groups have demonstrated active interest in invasive species issues. For example, the Nature Conservancy has been involved land management issues regarding invasive species and information dissemination through the printed press and the Internet.
Australia and New Zealand have shown a strong commitment to not allowing any more invasive species to enter the country. They have what is called a "white list" process. Exotic species named on the white list will be granted entry since their risk has already been evaluated by a risk assessment process and determined to be negligible. All other exotic species will be considered for entry only after careful evaluation through a risk assessment process. This is in contrast to the process used by the U.S, which is a "black list" process. Species named on the black list are excluded while essentially everything else might receive a permit for entry. |
