The United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) relies on the skill and expertise of its inspectors at U.S. international ports to detect invasive species of plant and animal pests that might be found in items being imported into the U.S. High tech scanning machines are used to detect illegal items inside luggage and some cargo. APHIS also uses trained Beagles sniff luggage to detect food such as fruit, vegetables, meat, and animal products that might contain pests harmful to animals and plants in the U.S.

The Fish and Wildlife Service (Department of the Interior) port inspectors have the responsibility for permitting and inspecting the importation of fish, and wildlife (non-agricultural mammals, reptiles, etc.)
