Education and Learning
Currently there are few Internet sites providing educational material for students.
A tremendous opportunity exists in this area for universities, scientific organizations,
professional scientific societies, and school systems themselves to gather and develop
educational resources to be made available on the Internet. Additional curricula on invasive species
need to be developed for all levels of education, starting as early as the first or
second grade. These curricula should emphasize the importance of the diversity found
in all forms of life around us. Importance should be given to the value of existing
plant and animal life and how these organisms may prove useful to mankind in the future.
It is important for the students of today, the leaders of tomorrow, to be aware of how
invasive species can radically change the makeup of plant and animal life that surrounds
us. One excellent opportunity for educating the leaders of tomorrow is through the
badge programs of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and 4H. For example, the Boy Scouts
have a merit badge for Environmental Science, which is a requirement to become an
Eagle Scout. This would be an appropriate platform for developing a module on
Invasive Species.
