Invertebrates are animals without backbones and range broadly in size and complexity. The major groups of invertebrates include rotifers, jellyfish, flatworms, ribbonworms, roundworms, segmented worms, starfish and their relatives, mollusks (snails, clams, octopuses, etc.) and arthropods (lobsters, crabs, spiders, insects, centipedes, and millipedes).

The better known invertebrate invasive species are primarily insects, although some very important pests, such as the zebra mussel, are from the other groups.
